Russell Okung is an entrepreneur and businessman but you might best know him as a Super Bowl champion. Okung is a big-time bitcoin commentator and fan. It doesn’t just stop there though as he is a big enthusiast of blockchain technology and is also the founder of BitcoinIs_.

Speaking to CoinDesk, Okung spoke on the industry and why the leading cryptocurrency is important to athletes like himself.

“I’ve recently become the “bitcoin guy” in the locker room, complete with both ridicule and intrigue. My teammates are understandably curious about why I’m suddenly so into this “magic internet money” called bitcoin. The truth is, long before I tweeted “Pay Me in Bitcoin,” I’d become increasingly exhausted by constant struggle, endless conflict and the frequent absence of hope.”

The footballer went onto talk about the mainstream aspect of Bitcoin and why it hasn’t yet been captured in the public eye.

“Bitcoin is a direct threat to economic power. In fact, one of the main reasons that bitcoin hasn’t fully captured the mainstream consciousness is because it’s a direct threat to the current order. In other words, those who currently sit at the top of the socioeconomic hierarchy of our world are not incentivized by the inevitable success of bitcoin. Conversely, there are many who will see their fortunes significantly reduced as global economic turmoil continues to escalate, the dollar continues to weaken, and inflation reaches levels not previously imagined.”

The Rise of Crypto

The rise in the price of cryptocurrencies has been often accompanied by an increase of general interest such as Okung but also by big institutional investors too. At the end of 2017, we saw a lot more people enter the market who probably never even heard of cryptocurrency and get involved with the space. Over the course of the last two years, crypto has grown in a more subtle way than we would like but it has surely stretched itself across the globe.
